NBTN Webcast

NBTN took its message to Hampshire in November 2009 as part of the county council’s Smart Commute Week, without even travelling there.

The pioneering council has a reputation for “green credentials” which includes innovative use of technology to cut its carbon footprint and to encourage others in the region to do so.

So it was fitting then that NBTN Director Heather McInroy was involved to help highlight ways that the Network can help businesses cut back on their commuting and business travel and reduce emissions.

The 30 minute interactive webcast presented and then discussed the essential elements and different forms of travel plans with tips and a focus on how to build the business case in a way that will convince senior executives to buy in to the approach based on bottom-line, staff and CSR type benefits.

As well as listening in and participating in online polls, delegates from Hampshire - and indeed around the country - were able to join in a live question and answer session.

Smart Commute Week is an annual campaign highlighting smarter, more flexible-ways of working and commuting that can lead to a more productive and healthier workforce, a better work-life balance and reduced carbon emissions and traffic congestion.

Many companies and individuals across Hampshire pledged their support for Smart Commute Week and they agreed to participate in the initiative on at least one of the five days during the week by either car sharing, using video conferencing instead of travelling to a meeting, working from home or a Smarter Working Centre or by using public transport instead of their cars.

Webcasts were held on each day of the working week starting on 2 November with topics covering car clubs, instant meetings, the home working revolution and NBTN’s Smart Travel Plans.

Heather told NBTN News: ‘Whilst I’d been involved in webcasts in the past, I hadn’t actually presented on one before.  I thought it was an excellent way of using technology to get the NBTN message across and would like to thank Tony Corbin (a very active NBTN member!) at Matisse for his invitation to participate and also the team at Ozone Conferencing team for all their support’.
